Waste No More - Crowdfunding

26 November, 2018

Sea Turtle Conservation Curacao and Green Phenix launch a crowdfunding for a pilot project “Waste no more” that fights plastic pollution in the Caribbean at the core of the problem. The project facilitates 20 talented and passionate people work on a solution for the plastic pollution problem. Inspired by Dave Hakkens Precious Plastic V4, “waste no more” aims to build capacity for the Caribbean region, to repurpose waste plastic into meaningful products and to start a circular revolution throughout the Caribbean.

Plastic is filling up the ocean and if nothing changes we will have more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050. Only 14% of all the plastic that we use is being recycled. That means 86% is lost and might end up as pollution. This threatens human life, hurts wildlife and habitats and it also is a waste of resources. When you visit the windward side of the Caribbean islands you are confronted with the devastating results. And that needs to change.

The core of this global problem is the linear economy where products become “waste” at the end of their lifecycle, overflowing the earth as pollution. Virgin plastic is cheap and therefor it is often chosen over recycled content. Short term that seem profitable, but the price we pay long term is enormous. The plastic soup has become one of our biggest challenges of our lifetime and fixing that is going to cost a lot of time, energy and money.

Only with collaboration, and a massive shift to a circular economy, will we be able to change the tide. We need legislation that ban single use plastic, we need to reduce the use of virgin plastic and we need to give incentives to use recycled content instead. Companies should take responsibility and we need innovative solutions for the currently wasted resources.

Waste no more will create and test different products, will create awareness, will reduce waste and pollution and it will also facilitate recycling by separated waste collection. 20 passionate people, 8 of which are Curacao residents, will start a circular revolution.  To support the project please visit the link. You can preorder a phenix bin or choose another way to support the project. Your help is needed and highly appreciated!
