A step in a broader movement to strengthen innovation and collaboration on Curaçao

On 20 August 2025, the University of Curaçao (UoC) invites entrepreneurs, professionals, students, and social innovators to join a unique AI for Good masterclass. The aim: to demonstrate how artificial intelligence can be applied for sustainable and societal impact — and to connect change makers across the island.

The masterclass will be led by Sabine Berendse, social entrepreneur, researcher, and founder of Green Phenix. She will show how AI can practically contribute to the circular economy, innovation in small communities, and resilient island development.

“We want to actively involve the community in major developments taking place in society and at our university,” says Dr. Stella van Rijn, Rector Magnificus of the UoC. “We see this workshop as an opportunity to bring together change makers and the ‘undercurrent,’ building on the momentum of the Green Week with Prof. Jan Rotmans. By connecting change makers, alignment and collaboration can emerge — which the university is eager to facilitate.”

From Inspiration to Collaboration

The AI for Good masterclass is designed as a practical working session. Participants will not only explore new AI applications but also gain insight into who on Curaçao is working on which innovations. From this first gathering, a network can emerge that strengthens and accelerates each other’s efforts.

Sabine Berendse: “AI can open doors we didn’t even see a few years ago. For islands, this means we can develop solutions ourselves where we were once dependent on outside resources. This workshop is meant to show that technology can be a powerful ally in creating a sustainable future for all.”
