On Saturday, March 2nd 2024, we organized the third and concluding Open House for the RESEMBID project ‘To Reduce Plastic Pollution in Curaçao’s Marine Environment’ that we have been working on for the past 18 months. The doors of our recycling facility were opened for interested people and tours were given in Dutch, English and Papiamentu. It was a morning full of inspiration, learning and networking.
During the RESEMBID project, we have aimed to develop innovative and creative recycling, steer education around the topic of plastic and engage the public in working towards a circular society. The visitors to our Open House were taken through the process of recycling, where they learnt what the different types of plastics are, how they can best separate their waste, and what beautiful art pieces can be made out of their waste. However, we also introduced the waste pyramid and concrete actions to reduce plastic consumption, to emphasize that recycling is not the most favorable way to deal with plastic pollution.
It was tremendous to see the wide variety of interested people, from local university students and curious neighbors to an international carbon credit supplier and an innovative circularity price winner. The exchange of knowledge and ideas with the visitors, in combination with our homemade and plastic waste-free arepas di pampuna and awa di lamunchi, made the perfect recipe for a fruitful Saturday morning.
